catchytunes: (♪ When I find myself in times of trouble)
Tomas is an NPC from the series Steve Jackson Games In Nomine, specifically from the adventure series Revelations Cycle, Book 1: Night Music.

Tomas is, well, an angel. Yes, his word of power is Catchy Tunes. He serves the Archangel of Creation though he's mostly left to his own devices as he self-manages quite well. Tomas currently resides in Texas, which has a tenuous peace between angels and demons largely thanks to Tomas who has earned the name 'Peacemaker'. Said angels and demons make a point to keep that peace from their bosses notice when possible to make sure no one gets in trouble. Some people are just so obsessed with the war between heaven and hell they miss the trees for the forest, you know? To that end sometimes Tomas pretends to be a demon when speaking with out of towner demons to help smooth things over with his friends. That said, unless he's speaking with another celestial (angel or demon) he's just your friendly neighborhood Tomas who always has new music to share and doesn't seem to have a steady job but he's pleasant enough.

The specific type of angel he is are called Mercurians and they're (unsurprisingly if you meet Tomas) the most human breed of angels aside from the Grigori but we don't talk about the Grigori. The downside to being able to know a person with a look or a touch is that Tomas can only inflict violence upon demons - to try to harm a human is so against the purpose of his creation that his soul is harmed from the act itself. That's alright though he's never been the fighting type, even with demons.

Seeing as his word is Catchy Tunes, yes, Tomas sings a lot, voice of an angel, etc. He also plays the drums (badly).

As a Mercurian Tomas has the ability to 'know' people, basically. Anything from "Hey, how do you feel about yourself at this current moment in time?" to "I have just watched the DVD series of your life with director commentary on as well."

This post is a catch all to opt out of Tomas' powers being used - he might try anyway, but I'll just state that he always manages to fail that roll instead of grabbing my dice for it. ALTERNATELY you can also give me a cap for how much information you're okay with him figuring out. Ex., maybe you're okay with Levels 1-3, but you'd rather not him get level 4-6. Since I will actually be rolling dice whenever he tries to resonate someone, If I manage to roll a 6 for the information I will just bump it down to the highest okay'd number (in that case, a 3).

(That being said, if in a specific instance you want him to succeed from a narration standpoint, just shoot me a note with the information and what you want him to get. I've always been a 'roll the dice and see if they look pretty' kind of GM/Player)

These powers are abilities granted by his Archangel or Songs (spells) learned by Thomas.

Mercurian of Creation These Mercurians, counterparts to Eli's Elohim, are the makers of talismans. It takes one month for every level of a skill the artifact is imbued with. The angel must also know the skill.

Elohim of Creation Elohim who serve Eli hold the secrets of binding Songs into the physical objects to create relics and reliquaries. It takes one month of finding and preparing materials for each level of Song in a relic, and/or every point of Essence the reliquary is to contain. The angel must also know Transubstantiation.

Transubstantiation The angel may imbue inorganic elements with the complex organic energies of life. For each point of Essence spent, he may convert 1 quart of common liquid, such as water or ammonia, into a complex organic solution, such as wine or blood, or a cubic foot of common material, such as sand or sodium, into a common (although relatively more complex) organic pattern, such as bugs or fish. He may also convert small amounts of one organic substance into another, at the GM's discretion.

Abracadabra The angel can create base matter from nothingness. For each point of Essence spent, he may create a tenth of an ounce of rare mineral, such as precious metal; 1 cubic foot of a common metal or material, such as iron or sulfur, or 1 cubic yard of simple, mundane and common earthly substance, such as rock, iron, or water.

Dissonance
Violence generates dissonance in Mercurians. It is the antithesis of politics, the dampener of reason. When they let themselves fall under the spell of violent passion, lasing out madly makes them feel better but pushes them farther away from their resonance - except against demons, who deserve such attention. They particularly enjoy taking out their violent urges against Impudites, their Fallen brethren. This doesn't mean they don't advocate violence; they just don't indulge in it themselves. When negotiations break down, a Mercurian has to know when to step aside and wave in the sharp knives of the Malakim.
